I’ve been in business for…
6 months (as an independent consultant)
Why I set up my business
After 25 years consultative selling and working for others – I found I was only using a fraction of my skills in one defined job role. I also found that I could add value and advise clients outside of my job role parameters – but this wasn’t always in keeping with my Employers thinking. After recently turning 50 years young – I got that ‘itch’ that a lot of middle-aged professionals get and decided to scratch it rather than ignore it.
6 months down the line having gained a professional qualification through the Institute of Consulting and been approved as an adviser on the government backed ‘Growth Voucher’ scheme (to match my 25 years B2B & B2C practical experience) – I am now advising small to medium sized businesses on how to get their sales function working more effectively, which helps aids their growth and profitability.
My best day in business so far
This was my first client and making the realisation that I could help make a real difference to their future growth and profitability. It was also a help that this client was open to new thinking and realised that their market conditions and customer buying habits were changing.
Unfortunately I meet a lot of SME’s who wonder why their market-share is shrinking but want to carry on doing the same thing they have done for years gone-by. The government backed Growth Voucher scheme has helped a number of small businesses that are wary of change – by funding some of the cost of professional advice, so I hope this trial scheme is extended beyond the end of it’s finish next month.
My biggest pet peeve as a small business owner:
I start every day with…
A cuddle with the Missus, a coffee and the morning paper
The app I couldn’t live without is:
Any Social Media
In five years’ time my business will be…
More established and more mature – like myself. It would be good to pass on my experience, so would hope to be in a position where I have employed others and created jobs. An apprentice would be a great way to start.
The one thing I wish I’d known when I started up is:
Employ an Accountant from day 1.
My favourite small business is:
Any Sole Trader – because they do everything themselves.
My superpower would be…
‘Laughing Gas Man’ – helping the world to laugh, when humour is needed
